Amidst the pandemic we constantly hear that “we’re all in this together,” but the individual story has been lost. I recorded over 40 glimpses of personal stories using the Rose-Bud-Thorn sharing exercise to feel like a person again.
2020 has impacted all of us one way or another. The pandemic has turned my last semesters of college on it's head and has cause a great sense of loneliness. With mental health as an importantly highlighted topic I found myself exploring different exercises. This project was inspired by the sharing exercise Rose-Bud-Thorn, where participants share something good (rose), something bad (thorn), and something they're looking forward to (bud). I asked strangers those around me to share their rose, bud and thorn for 2020 and the future. I appreciate the exercise because it guides us to think hopefully while acknowledging individual struggles.
Responses were written on different packs of mingled playing cards and recorded. This project has reminded me of how personalized individual experiences of this year has been, and that all stories are important.
Some of the collected statements include or reference death, loss of a loved one, substance abuse, mature language and sexual assault. References appear on the cards and in the audio recordings
